Avoce Extension Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 17, 2026
This policy explains how the Avoce Chrome extension (the "Extension") handles your information. The Extension is an extension of the Avoce real-time captioning and translation service: after you press "Start" on a tab, it captures that tab's audio, transcribes and translates it in real time, and overlays captions on the page.
General data practices — accounts, payments, transcript storage — are the same as the website and are described in the avoce.ai Privacy Policy (/privacy). This page covers what is specific to the Extension.
1. Data the Extension handles
Tab audio (only for tabs you choose). The Extension captures a tab's audio only when you actively press "Start" on that tab, and streams it in real time to our speech-processing provider to produce captions. It does not capture audio or content from tabs you do not translate.
Login state (reused from the website). The Extension does not create its own login. It reuses your existing avoce.ai login cookie to authenticate and meter usage. It does not read or collect your password.
Transcripts and translations. The source and translated text produced during a session, handled the same way as on the website (they can be saved to your account for cross-device history).
Local preferences. Your source/target language, engine choice, and caption-bar position are stored locally in your browser (chrome.storage), used only by the Extension, and are not uploaded.
2. How we process your tab audio
Captured audio is streamed in real time to our speech recognition and translation provider (OpenAI) for processing, and captions are returned and displayed in real time.
Audio is processed in real time and is not stored long-term; the resulting caption text is handled per the website Privacy Policy.
While capturing, the tab continues to play its sound through your speakers normally (we pass the audio through; the tab is not muted).
3. Permission justifications
tabCapture, activeTab: temporary access to the current tab when you invoke the Extension and start, in order to capture its audio.
scripting: to inject the caption overlay into the tab you selected.
offscreen: to run the real-time connection and audio processing in a background document.
storage: to save your language/engine preferences and caption-bar position (stored locally only).
Host permission avoce.ai: to call our backend for authentication, metering, and text translation.
Host permission api.openai.com: to establish the real-time speech connection for streaming audio.
The Extension does not request all-site access such as <all_urls>; the caption content script stays dormant until you press Start.
4. What we do not do
We do not track your browsing history and do not read the content of tabs you have not chosen to translate.
We do not sell your personal data or use it for purposes unrelated to providing the service.
We do not collect your password or full payment card number (payments are handled by Stripe on the website).
5. Relationship to the website Privacy Policy
The Extension reuses your avoce.ai account and backend. Account information, payments, transcript storage, retention periods, your rights, and contact details are governed by the avoce.ai Privacy Policy (avoce.ai/privacy), which this page supplements.
